The Frederick Harris Gallery invites Members to an evening of discourse over complimentary wine and canapés.
The exhibit, organized by the College Women’s Association of Japan (CWAJ), presents Mount Fuji through the lens of Hideo Hagiwara and four other printmakers whose works reflect the mountain’s shifting spirit and timeless allure. Hagiwara, born in Yamanashi in 1913, earned international acclaim for his woodblock prints and his Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji series, which captured the UNESCO site in striking and unexpected forms.
“Mount Fuji defies all challenges. That is why people approach it with cameras and drawing pens. Whether it looks noble or vulgar depends on your mind’s eye,” Hagiwara once said, a sentiment echoed throughout the exhibition.
The Club exhibit precedes the 68th CWAJ Print Show opening October 15 at Hillside Forum in Daikanyama. Proceeds from print sales support CWAJ’s scholarship program for women pursuing higher education in Japan and abroad.
The artworks will be on display from September 24 through October 12.
Artworks are available for purchase through Member Services.
